Background
Atiku Abubakar rose from modest origins in Adamawa State to become one of Nigeria's most prominent political figures. He served as Vice President under President Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007, a tenure marked by both significant economic reform advocacy and a well-documented falling-out with the presidency.
A businessman of considerable wealth, Abubakar has built a reputation as a pro-privatisation, market-oriented politician. He has contested the presidency multiple times — in 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023 — making him one of the most persistent presidential candidates in Nigeria's democratic history.
His 2023 candidacy under the PDP banner ended in a disputed result, with Abubakar challenging the outcome at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal. The challenge was ultimately unsuccessful. He now carries the ADC's presidential ticket for 2027.
