Background
Peter Obi served two terms as Governor of Anambra State, a tenure he has consistently described as one of fiscal prudence and infrastructure investment. He has pointed to a reduction in state borrowing and an increase in foreign reserves as hallmarks of his administration — claims that have since been subject to independent scrutiny, including GSR's own investigation into the Anambra external loans record.
In 2023, Obi ran under the Labour Party banner and secured approximately 6.1 million votes — a remarkable showing for a third-party candidate — driven largely by a youth mobilisation movement that became known as the "Obidient" wave. He challenged the result at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, which upheld the election of Bola Tinubu.
For 2027, Obi carries the presidential ticket of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). He remains a polarising figure: celebrated by his supporters as a reformist technocrat and scrutinised by critics over the accuracy of his governance record.
