The official campaign period for Nigeria's 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections commences today, Wednesday 19 August 2026. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the Presidential and House of Assembly election for Saturday, 16 January 2027, with the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections to follow on Saturday, 6 February 2027.

In accordance with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, public campaign by political parties and candidates is permitted from today and must cease no later than 24 hours before election day — placing the official close of the presidential campaign period at midnight on Thursday, 15 January 2027.

The campaign window spans approximately 150 days, giving registered political parties and their candidates the longest sustained electioneering period in recent Nigerian electoral history. INEC has consistently reminded parties that campaign activities conducted outside the designated period, or in violation of the Electoral Act and the Commission's regulations, are subject to sanction.

"Campaign in public officially commences in line with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and ends 24 hours prior to election day."

With 21 registered political parties currently on INEC's list and a total of 91,271,520 voters on the national register, the 2027 general elections represent one of the most consequential electoral exercises in Nigeria's democratic history. The Commission has urged all parties and candidates to conduct their campaigns with civility, to respect the rights of opponents, and to refrain from violence, hate speech, and the destruction of campaign materials.

INEC's headquarters is located at Plot 436 Zambezi Crescent, Maitama District, FCT, Abuja. Citizens can verify their voter registration status, confirm polling unit locations, and access election guidelines through the Commission's official portal at inecnigeria.org.
